Benefits of Pre & Post Natal Exercise

We are huge fans of fit mums here at Slice. We host a range of pre and post natal exercise classes, but do you actually know the benefits of exercising before and after giving birth?



The American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommend a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week for healthy pregnant and postpartum women. Regular exercise during pregnancy helps with weight management and may prevent and/or help manage gestational diabetes, a condition that may increase the risk of depression and a Caesarean section delivery.


Strengthening the core before pregnancy and in the first trimester may minimise the risk for lower back pain (LBP). In addition, maintaining strength in the back during the second and third trimesters and post-natal period (especially while still breastfeeding) should also help maintain good posture, reducing the risk for back pain.


Exercise also releases endorphins; elevating your mood while helping to regulate bodily functions such as sleep (which we can all use a bit more of). Endorphins play a big role in clearing the mind when hormones seem to be clouding your thoughts and emotions.


Group exercise classes are also a great way to socialise and meet other new mums. It is proven that socialising with other mums and babies is beneficial to both you and your baby's mental health! A great time to start coming to classes is after you've had clearance from your doctor (normally 6 weeks postpartum for natural birth or 12 for cesarean section).


Having a newborn is intensely time consuming and exhausting; however, this is also an opportune time to create new life-long habits such as daily physical exercise. Slice mum and baby classes make it simple to bring your baby along, eliminating the need to find childcare. However, if you want to attend a class solo we have a crèche on site!


So drop on in to a Slice class for mums or mums to be! We will be happy to keep you fit and healthy during your pregnancy journey.
